BEACON has moved!

At the end of June, BEACON moved premises along with Touchstone, where BEACON has been renting a small office for many years. We are thrilled with our new working space and the facilities available here and are pleased to be able to work more closely with Abigail Housing who do fantastic work accommodating destitute asylum seekers in Bradford, and who are now also based at Touchstone. Walk For Justice 2018 BEACON’s annual sponsored Walk for Justice will be held this year on Wednesday 20th June 2018 (World Refugee Day) as part of Refugee Week   Start: 9.30am, Centenary Square (leaving at 10am prompt), Bradford End: 4pm (approx.), Kirkstall Abbey, Leeds (TBC) Length: 10 miles (approx.) We’re looking for new McKenzie Friends volunteers to join our passionate and dynamic team! McKenzie Friends volunteers support asylum seekers who have no access to legal representation, assisting them to access legal representation after an asylum refusal and accompanying asylum seekers to appeal hearings. Pharmacist Pete Dawson visits the CHAT English Club

We had a great English conversation session at the CHAT English Club last week, when visiting pharmacist Pete Dawson explained about current pharmacy services and how best to use them, taking lots of questions, listening to student experiences and doing some impressive role plays.  Groups of students at advanced, intermediate and early stages of learning English worked with Pete and volunteers to power up their English vocabulary and skills for real-life situations. Can you support BEACON’s Hosting Project?

Over the past 9 years our small volunteer-led Hosting Project has accommodated more than 60 destitute asylum seekers in the homes of our wonderful volunteer host households in Bradford. At least a third of our guests have gone on to be granted Leave to Remain in the UK. Without our support, these people would be left street homeless in the UK or forced to return to the desperate situations from which they have been forced to flee.
